Home to many a notable family. In the 16th century, the castle was partially destroyed during the English Civil War and was rebuilt in the Victorian era.
The Ghosts of Tamworth Castle
Many stories have been told over the years. A figure has been seen from the courtyard standing in the Ferrers’ Room window, when no one was in the castle.
One is said to be the most famous of them all: the “Green Lady”. We believe it to be the ghost of Lady Elizabeth Drury, who was imprisoned in the castle for her part in the Babington plot to assassinate Queen Elizabeth I. She is still seen walking around the rooms to this day.
A member of staff felt she was struck in the face and momentarily blinded. Claiming it felt like sand had been thrown into her eyes. When she cleared her eyes, she saw a blue mist swirl around the room and then disappear out the window. The mist was at least six feet high.
Another ghost said to haunt the castle is a man in black, believed to be the ghost of a soldier killed during the English Civil War, but many who have seen him say he appears friendly. Well, we need to find out for ourselves.
The most talked about ghost is that of the ‘Black Lady’ who haunts the Lady’s Chamber; it is believed to be that of a 9th-century nun called Editha who was expelled from Polesworth Abbey by the first Baron Marmion.
With many ghost stories, this is the ideal location for a paranormal investigation.
