Ghost Hunt – Dower House
Boughton House is a country house in the parish of Weekley in Northamptonshire, situated 3 miles northwest of Kettering, Northamptonshire. It is set within an estate of 11,000 acres. It is one of Britain’s best-preserved stately homes, with a world-renowned art collection and stunning landscaped gardens.
The Dower House, Grade II* listed
History
The House as it stands today is primarily the work of Ralph Montagu, later 1st Duke of Montagu, who inherited a more straightforward Tudor building in 1683.
His son, John, 2nd Duke of Montagu, was passionate about the landscape and made grand changes to the gardens. His new landscape spanned 100 acres, featuring water features, splendid vistas, and tree-lined avenues.
Derelict and Empty!
After the death of the 2nd Duke, the House passed through the female line to noble families whose primary residences were elsewhere. The Dukedom of Montagu became extinct, and the House ‘slept’ for two centuries.
However, in the 20th century, it once again became a beloved family home, the residence of the Duke of Buccleuch and Queensberry, a descendant of the Montagu’s.
Today, the House remains a great favourite among visitors seeking peace, elegance, and the expression of man’s pursuit of cultural excellence.
