Newstead Abbey

About Newstead Abbey

Ghost Hunt Newstead Abbey.

Newstead Abbey was formerly an Augustinian priory, founded by Henry II of England in 1170 as one of the many penances he paid following the murder of Archbishop of Canterbury, Thomas Becket.

The building was converted to a family home in 1539 as part of the Dissolution of the Monasteries, with the monks throwing the lectern into the Abbey fishpond to save it (this was recovered in the late 1700s and now resides in Southwell Minster).

Newstead was also home to Lord Byron, who described the decaying ruin in his poetry – “Thro’ thy battlements, Newstead, the hollow winds whistle…” Spirits remain here from the house’s atmospheric past.

Who is the ‘White Lady’ who has been seen walking the gardens? And who is the ‘Rose Lady?’

Step into the footprints of those who once inhabited these halls. Engage with the echoes of history and the spirits that are rumored to remain, as if the very stone and wood hold memories yearning to be unveiled, inviting you to uncover their enigmatic stories.
