Quietly tucked away on the edge of Rockingham Forest is a genuinely unusual venue to visit. Despite its undisturbed setting, Southwick is full of History, stories and characters stretching back to the Middle Ages.
Over its 700 years, only three families have owned Southwick Hall.
The first were the Knyvetts – among them John, who became Lord Chancellor under the warmongering Edward III in 1372.
Do members of this influential family still reside here at Southwick Hall?
Then, the Lynne family took over the estate in the 15th century, and the family and the line continued here until the death in 1827 of the last natural heiress, Augusta.

The controversial Execution Warrant,
Over the years, the Lynne family, including scientists, lawyers, and an MP, were considered wealthy and noble. Local MP and a friend of Lord Burghley’s, George Lynne, is understood to have taken charge of the execution warrant of Mary Queen of Scots, signed by Elizabeth I and walled it in at Southwick. The Warrant has never been found to this day!

From the Victorian Era, the Capron family took over the house and estate and still owns this property today. During the last 200 years, there have been many additions to the estate, such as stable blocks, and these would become places of work for evacuees, Land Girls, and Prisoners of War during the World Wars.
