The manor started its long history as a priory.  During the dissolution of the monasteries, it was surrenders to the Crown.  Lawrence Washington, who was a former Mayor of Northamptonshire purchase the property from King Henry VIII in 1539.  Lawrence was the 5th times Great Grandfather of the first President of the USA, George Washington.  So this house provides great connections between the UK and USA.

The Washington ancestors would reside here for the next 120 years!

Do any of the Washington family still reside here?  Do they haunt their old family home?

The house was occupied by Lawrence Washington, his wife and their 11 children and passed onto only on other generation of the Washington family.  As with all great Tudor houses, the centre was the Great Hall which still looks as it did in its day.

With so many years of history, it is no wonder that this house has tales of civil war, financial ruin and shipwrecks.

So what spirits continue to reside in their family home? Who are the spirits in the attic?

Wander through the rooms, attic, cellars, courtyards, walled gardens and many outbuildings and soak up the atmosphere of this once thriving household.  When darkness falls, the manor transports you back in time…

Who still haunts the amazing Sulgrave manor and who is the man in the cellar?

With many ghost stories, this is the ideal location for a paranormal investigation.  And as a first for Haunted Heritage, we would love you to come along!!  Use our paranormal investigation equipment and see what activity you can experience!

The History of Sulgrave Manor

Sulgrave was originally a priory which surrendered to the Crown during the dissolution of the monastery. In 1540 three manors were sold together which included Sulgrave and was purchased by Laurence Washington a Wool Merchant and former Mayor of Northamptonshire.

In time he would be referred to as 5th times great grandfather of George Washington, the first president of the United Sates in 1789

The manor remained in the family for 3 generations before being sold to a Reverent Moss Hodges in 1673 and later purchased by the trust in 1914

In the 18th century The Culworth Gang were very active in the area, notably William Abbot the Parish Clerk of Sulgrave and a member of the Culworth Gang allegedly hid ill gotten gains in the church collection box and never performed a service without two loaded pistols. He was eventually caught and transported overseas for highway robbery
