A delightful Tudor and Georgian house set in a beautiful country garden. Built by the ancestors of George Washington the first US president. The history of the manor goes as far back to the 14th century with tales of civil war, financial ruin and shipwrecks. Once home to George Washington’s ancestors, was opened as a symbol of lasting peace and friendship between the UK and the USA.
Sulgrave is a small village with the Manor at its centre. It has a fascinating provence when you view its connections with the nobles of its time, The war of the Roses, the Tudors especially the Parr family, plus the English Civil war have all left there marks there.
Sulgrave was originally a priory which surrendered to the Crown during the dissolution of the monastery. In 1540 three manors were sold together which included Sulgrave and was purchased by Laurence Washington a Wool Merchant and former Mayor of Northamptonshire. In time he would be referred to as 5th times great grandfather of George Washington, the first president of the United Sates in 1789
The manor remained in the family for 3 generations before being sold to a Reverent Moss Hodges in 1673 and later purchased by the trust in 1914
In the 18th century The Culworth Gang were very active in the area, notably William Abbot the Parish Clerk of Sulgrave and a member of the Culworth Gang allegedly hid ill gotten gains in the church collection box and never performed a service without two loaded pistols. He was eventually caught and transported overseas for highway robbery
Sulgrave Manor - past events
We have come across several reoccurring stories and reported experiences of a particular entity within the manor. A strong dominant and terrifying individual who causes people to run blindly away from the area. Other reports are of being watched from the stairwells and corridors. There is also a male military presence in and around the cellar area.
The attic drew our mediums attention where she picked upon 3 girls of similar age and dress attire.
There is so much to explore at Sulgrave manor… so the question we ask is;
What lies beneath?
This venue is exclusive to Haunted Heritage and we are very much looking forward to carrying out the first investigation at this wonderful manor
